Interview: Will Sparks Speaks On ‘Blurred Lines’ And Dream Collab With Snoop Dogg

Any one who religiously follows EDM knows that the current electro invasion doesn’t travel from Sweden or the Netherlands, but rather from down under. Top-notch Australian acts are increasing every month from Stafford Brothers to Walden and more recently, Will Sparks, whose claim to fame can be found in his successful remix of Robin Thicke’s summer sensation “Blurred Lines.” Before Will embarks on his two-month North American tour, VIBE sits down for a chat to get the skinny on Sparks’ secret to a successful remix, praise straight from the Robin’s mouth, and a current collaboration wish list:

VIBE: For someone who may have never your music before, how would you describe it?
Will Sparks: I’ve tried so hard to explain it many of times, but the best I can come up with is that it’s like bouncey electro/Dutch. What I recommend though is you have to just listen to it to totally understand!

Right now you’re getting a lot of notoriety for your remix of Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines.’ What propelled you to take on such a challenge in the first place?
It was an incredible opportunity to be able to remix such a hit! Not only did I like the original, I knew exactly what I was going to do to it.

You even received praise from Robin Thicke himself via Twitter. What was it like to receive such an honor?
Wow, it was amazing… it’s hard to explain the feeling when stuff like that happens – it’s so surreal – but you just have to embrace it and enjoy the excitement.

Since the remix’s success, have you been approached by other artists to collaborate? Which ones?
Yes, there’s been a few offers which is so cool. The public will be hearing it all very soon!

Who would make up your collaboration dream team (in EDM, hip-hop, rap, etc)?
EDM: Showtek, Laidback Luke, and Afrojack for sure – those guys are gurus. In hip-hop, I would have to say Snoop. He’s too cool.

What other hit tracks do you want to remix next or are you working on original material?
A lot of original material is in the works, which I’m very happy about. I’m not sure, but definitely keen to get on board another Monster remix or two in the future!

You also have a huge North American tour lined up for the next two months. Any city you’re looking forward to partying in the most?
Well, to be honest I’m not sure what to expect from the places I’m playing, so I’m just excited to be here in America! I’ve already done places like XS Las Vegas and PACHA NYC, which have been mind blowing and all the rest have been insane too. The crowd reaction here has been phenomenal!
