Macklemore Talks 'Same Love,' Drug Addiction and Success With The Breakfast Club

Macklemore made a pit stop at Power 105.1's Breakfast Club while in New York to speak on his newfound success from his smash hit with Ryan Lewis, "Thrift Shop." He also delved into how he wants respect as an MC, his battle with drug addiction and latest single "Same Love," saying the inspiration came from his urge to address a real issue that has been swept under the rug in hip-hop. "To me [Same Love] was like a bigger issue," Macklemore explains. "I wanted to put myself out there in a way that was real, hold myself accountable, hold hip-hop accountable because it's a very homophobic art form and not only just challenge myself but the listeners to talk about an issue that I feel really doesn't get addressed in hip-hop music." Peep the full interview where he also comments on Kendrick Lamar's "Control" verse and prepping for the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards above.

Texas Administrator Suspended For Coloring In Black Student's Hair Design With Sharpie

A school administrator from Texas has been suspended from their position at Berry Miller Junior High in Pearland, after forcing a black student to color in a design shaved into his head with a permanent marker.

Per the New York Daily News, “The boy’s hairstyle featured the letter "M" on the left side of his head, which is a violation of the district’s dress code.” The school’s assistant principal told the boy at school the next day that he had three options: “notify his mother, face disciplinary action or cover it with a marker.”

A detailing of the incident was written by the boy’s mother, Angela Washington, on Facebook. Washington says she was never informed of the action taken against her son.

“On Wednesday at school the Assistant Principal at Berry Miller Jr High in Pearland ISD told him he was out of dress code with his designs and decided to color my baby design with a PERMANENT MARKER!” she wrote. She added accompanying photos, one of the day the incident occurred, and two more pictures from the day after. She notes that the black marker coloring is still in his head.

“The district said the administrator ‘mishandled’ the case and the actions do ‘not align with appropriate measures for dress code violations,’” the Daily News continues. “The assistant principal, who has not been named, was placed on administrative leave."

Pharrell Partners With Verizon For New Music Program

Pharrell Williams has reportedly teamed up with Verizon to launch a new music education program at Verizon innovative Learning schools nationwide, Billboard reports. The new initiative was announced on Friday (April 26).

The program, which was launched under the Verizon Foundation, will reportedly provide free technology, Internet access, and tech-focused curriculums to under-resourced middle schools around the country. The organization will also offer access to the Verizon Innovative Learning Lab that will include cutting-edge technology such as virtual reality and robotics. The lab will be located at a middle school in Pharrell's hometown, Virginia Beach.

"I want all children to have access to that kind of creative growth, access and support. All kids, not just my own," the producer told Billboard in a new interview. "There's a lot of variables in a situation as to why something falls apart, but there's only one scenario where it holds together, and that's when all the variables are there. The environment, the family, the school, the system -- there's so many things. We just want to do what we can to balance the odds so that as many kids as we can afford, or help and assist in whatever ways, get this access and support."

Pharrell is also gearing up for the inaugural Something in the Water festival. The one-day concert kicks off this Friday (April 26) with performances by Missy Elliott, Migos, Pusha-T, SZA, and more.
