President Obama to Award Oprah Winfrey with Presidential Medal of Freedom

Oprah Winfrey’s been the recipient of countless awards in her 30+ year career, but this one might take the cake. The legendary TV host is set to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award later this year. Established by President John F. Kennedy in the 1960’s, the honor is “presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”

Oprah’s contributions to the world include not only her show, but several films, assistance in political campaigns and philanthropic efforts, including her South African all-girls school.

Other 2013 recipients include former President Bill Clinton, civil rights leader Bayard Rustin and Ben Bradlee.

President Obama will present the awards later this year at a to-be-determined date.
