Trina Talks Brother’s Death, Performing Nicki Minaj Tribute
Camaraderie in female rap is hard to come by but at the BMI R&B/ Hip-Hop Awards Thursday night (August 22), mutual respect was the name of the game when Trina took the stage to perform a tribute to Nicki Minaj for the night’s honorees Birdman and Slim of Cash Money Records.
”I didn’t care that I’ve been in the game longer,” the Florida rapstress tells KarenCivil.com of her “Moment 4 Life” performance where she rocked a blonde Nicki-esque wig and flowy red gown. “It wasn’t about me. It was a tribute honoring her. I was only thinking, please don’t get caught in this train (laughs), but it was really great.”
Despite the Back 2 Business MC’s stellar rendition, Trina has recently faced personal struggles in the public eye with the recent murder of her 19-year-old brother Wilbrent “Gonk” Bain who was killed in April.
“There’s nothing in the world that could make me really understand that my brother is not here and I can’t get on the phone and say something to him,” she admits. “Sometimes I look at the text messages or look at the phone and still dial his number. Right before hitting that stage, I was literally in tears like, wow, he could’ve been here with me. But [I put on] a brave face, and when it was done, I felt happy.”
