Art of VIBE: Hebru Brantley Puts His Chicago South Side Roots Into His Art

Hebru Brantley grew up on Chicago’s South Side and he puts his hard knock Windy City roots into his artwork. VIBE caught up with the artist at his Penny Candy pop-up shop this past summer. He called it a Hebru Brand explosion featuring his artwork on everything from pillows to t-shirts to toys. On display were his trademark fly boy goggle paintings and his pop-culture friendly Michael collection where he pulls inspiration from Michael Jackson, Mike Tyson and His Airness Michael Jordan.

“What I consider myself is an afrofuturist,” says Brantley. “With an afrofuturist it’s a melding of different cultures, incorporating obviously certain aspects from Asia and Pan-Asian influence and so forth.”
