Show Review: Icona Pop Brings Large Sets, Hits And Perez Hilton To NYC

When Swedish dance duo Icona Pop took the stage at New York’s iconic Webster Hall last Friday (September 20), the venue became much more than a college stomping ground (where young New Yorkers usually romp to rock) but rather a visually stunning spectacle complete with a large LED back screen and towering side-stage props. Not to exaggerate, but it was almost like the production values of Madison Square Garden were transported and resized to accommodate Webster’s venue size.

The set up was worth it though since these chicks rock a pretty hard set. Made famous by their YOLO anthem “I Love It” (feat. Charli XCX), Icona Pop (aka Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo) have since solidified their place in the music industry by carrying on their carefree, ‘rock on’ attitude in the debut album This Is… Icona Pop (out today via Atlantic Records). Each of the album’s tracks was represented in Friday night’s show, including popular singles “All Night” and “Ready For the Weekend.”

On top of the impressive stage setup and chart-topping songs, some other highlights of the Icona Pop show include the linear works of art created by an array of spotlights, watching both Caroline and Aino play their own musical instruments including guitar, keyboards and the synth switchboard, hearing the girls harmonize and bust out every note flawlessly despite it being a live show, and of course seeing Perez Hilton get on stage.

That’s right, Perez Hilton made a surprise appearance onstage to announce that the girls went platinum with their single “I Love It” and presented them with a special plaque. Hugs and tears were shared before the girls closed out the night with platinum, sending the entire arena (and very well the entire city) into an uproar.

You can’t help but love these girls, either through your speakers or onstage, because of what they represent – that particular feeling of freedom that is found in the stages of our youth. To be able to stay up all night and party into the early hours of dawn, to live without consequences, to face with the world with only your close friend by your side – that is… Icona Pop.
