Viola Davis on Taking Off the Wigs: 'I No Longer Wanted to Apologize for Who I Am'
Soon after The Help premiered in theatres worldwide, it made superstars out of Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone and Viola Davis. For months, all three appeared on virtually every red carpet to recieve awards and support the film. Viola in particular could be seen rocking a bevy of stylish wigs to cover up her natural tresses.
Today, the Oscar nominated actress seems to be singing a different tune when it comes to her image. She is Essence's latest cover subject, where she can be seen rocking a natural fro. Inside, she dishes on why she ditched synthetic tresses for her own.
"I had to defend myself as an artist, but I found myself defending myself as a dark-skinned black woman in front of people who did not know my life. I took my wig off because I no longer wanted to apologize for who I am."
She also gushes about her family and teaching her to love herself, hair included.
"There’s not one woman in America who does not care about her hair. But we give it way too much value," she says. "We deprive ourselves of things, we use it to destroy each other, we’ll look at a child and judge a mother and her sense of motherhood by the way the child’s hair looks. I am not going to traumatize my child about her hair. I want her to love her hair."
