'MasterChef' Star Diagnosed With Schizophrenia Before Committing Suicide
Masterchef finalist Josh Marks was found dead in a Chicago alley on Friday (Oct. 11). The cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A revolver was retrieved from near his body.
Marks' mom Paulette Mitchell is speaking out in the wake of her son's tragic death. She says he was never the same after his run on Gordon Ramsey's Masterchef aired in 2012. Following his 15-minutes of fame, Marks suffered anxiety and was prescribed medication, but nothing worked and he eventually developed more serious mental problems. This past July he was arrested for assault and claimed, at the time, that Ramsey had possessed his body.
Marks had completed an out-patient program at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center the day before he killed himself, where he was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
"He couldn't bear the thought of another diagnosis," Mitchell told the Chicago Tribune. "He was just coming to accept the diagnosis of bipolar."
Mitchell stayed with Marks the whole day until she had to pick up her daughter from school. That's when she received a call from her brother that Marks was walking down an alley holding a gun.
"I didn't reach my boy in time," she told the paper. Mitchell hopes that Marks' story will bring more awareness to mental health. She plans to start a foundation in his honor.
