VH1 To Release Documentary Based On Steve Stoute Book ‘Tanning Of America’
If you’ve ever seen the Cocaine Cowboys documentaries, you know that they’re fascinating stories with incredible details, and wild characters abound in both movies, making them entertaining enough for multiple watches.
Now those same directors are turning their attention towards hip-hop and taking a cue from Steve Stoute’s latest book for a documentary called The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy, releasing in February 2014 on TV.
The movie will cover cultural landmarks like Russell Simmons cutting a deal with Adidas during an infamous Run DMC concert at MSG, Tommy Hilfiger turning his eye towards urban streetwear, two Harvard kids starting The Source in their dorm room, and plenty of other hip-hop history that will be told with various first-person narration.
More details to come.
