Sony To Expand ‘Spider-Man’ Universe With Venom / Sinister Six Spinoffs

As The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer makes it way around the World Wide Web, news from Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad hint at expanding the web-slinger’s world with spinoff movies for Venom and The Sinister Six.

“Until now, we have approached each film as a separate, self-contained entity,” Arad and Tolmach explained in a recently released statement. “But with this move, we have the opportunity to grow the franchise by looking to the future as we develop a continuous arc for the story.”

To make these movies into its own universe, a creative “brain trust” has been formed, which includes director Marc Webb, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard. Together these five will collaboratively develop these films as a linked set of projects. This will explain why Andrew Garfield recently said that the fourth film has “not anything to do with me,” as the next film after Spider-Man 3 will presumably focus on Spidey’s villains.

Kurtzman will tackle the upcoming Venom, as director and co-writer, while Goddard will pen a script for The Sinister Six, which features The Lizard, Rhino, Electro, Green Goblin, Vulture, and Doctor Octopus.

Joss Whedon’s protégé has also been thrown around as the pen behind the Marvel / Netflix Daredevil TV show, which should be an incredible sight to see.

Arad and Tolmach added, “This collaboration was born out of the great experience we and Marc had working with Alex, Bob, and Jeff on The Amazing Spider-Man 2. With more than fifty years’ wealth of stories in the comic books to draw upon for inspiration, the Spider-Man universe is truly boundless; in addition, the Spider-Man comics have the greatest rogues gallery of any series, and to have the chance to explore that on film is truly thrilling. That is what Alex, Bob, Jeff, Ed, and Drew will do in this unprecedented collaboration, and we’re excited about the directions they are taking the character and the world.”

It is exciting times for Marvel and all parties involved! The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits cinemas on April 18, 2014. Watch the full trailer below!
