Barney’s NY Casts Transgender Models in Spring ’14 Campaign

Barney’s New York is making headlines again, but this time for being radical, not racist. The luxury department store released its 2014 spring ad campaign showcasing 17 transgender models. Barney’s is making a bold statement of support for the transgender community.

“Brothers, Sisters, Sons, and Daughters” was photographed in black and white and shot by Bruce Weber. The project was inspired by Dennis Freedman, who was the former Creative Director at W Magazine and the driving force behind all of Barney’s ad campaigns. He told the New York Times that he intended to raise awareness for the misunderstood transgender community.

“I was exquisitely aware that in the last decade, the L.G.B. communities have made extraordinary advances, and the transgender community has not shared in that progress,” Mr. Freedman said.
