10 of Our Favorite Natural Celebrities
In the late 1970's, the black power movement was something serious. The afro was a symbols of strength and courage. In 2013, women became more accepting and comfortable in their own skin and in their own hair once again. Hopefully these celebrity naturalistas will help encourage some of you to embrace your natural curls in 2014.
Yaya in her soft Bantu curls. Bantu Knot curls are a simple and non-damaging way to get salon curls for people with hair that doesn't do that curl-out-the-shower thing. It can be pretty time consuming and the only way it is effective is when it is twisted when wet and taken out when dry. Try sleeping on this one.
Remember when every girl wanted to cornroll their hair on one side and leave the other side out? That was all Alicia's doing. We loved the super "homegirl" hair style, but it was time for some maturity with Alicia and her natural locks. These days, Alicia has cut her hair much shorter and has been experimenting with more age-appropriate looks like this one. It's fun, yet elegant. Pinned on both sides with curls on top, Alicia has given us a very edgy and feminine mohawk style.
It's always awkward those first couple of months when you started fresh and you have the mini fro. Make sure you don't get discouraged because it will pay off in the long run. Solange Knowles was patient and went from this short mini fro to a beautiful, illustrious fro.
Janelle Monae is the definitely a QUEEN! Beautiful and bold, Janelle has embraced her God-given waves and has learned what looks good on her. We definitely like what we see with her creative updo's.
Lisa Bonet gives us life and inspiration with her all-natural waist length dreadlocks. She's always had beautiful natural curls and sported them well during her time as Denise Huxtable, but with age came a more sophisticated natural approach when she decided to try something new and turn them into these perfectly dangling locks.
We're definitely a little unsure of what Erykah Badu's air looks like under her many natural wigs and weaves, but we know its virgin. Whether its wrapped up in Kente cloth or picked out in a large afro, the Badoula Oblongata never ceases to amaze us with her unique natural hair styles.
Kelis is giving us black Cruella with this bleached streak in the front of her hair. It's always a nice touch to add some color to your kinks.
Corinne Bailey Rae's curls have transitioned from a short bob to long and luscious locks, giving her hair much texture and volume.
Goapele wanted some change in 2014. She decided to cut her dreads off and go with this golden natural fro.
We love Tracee Ellis Ross. She always keeps it simple with her hair and has always kept in natural. Since Girlfriends days, Tracee has been sporting her natural hair. She lets her style speak for itself by putting her hair in the messy bun, which shows off her big beautiful eyes. This is a go-to hair style when you're in a hurry and it's great for long, natural hair.
