Man Murdered In Florida Movie Theater For Texting
This won't get your day off to a peachy start. Reports surfaced yesterday that a Florida man at the movies who was texting his daughter while promos played before the film was shot and killed by an ex-police captain.
The victim is 43-year-old Chad Oulson, and he was seeing Lone Survivor at a theater called Cinebistro 16. He was allegedly texting his 3-year-old daughter as previews began to play, and an attendee next to him, 71-year-old Curtis Reever Jr., asked him if he could stop.
Oulson refused and Reeves left the theater seeking a manager to speak to. When he found none, he returned to the theater, and as Oulson was still texting, Reeves asked him to stop yet again. According to ABC News, "additional words were exchanged" before Oulson threw popcorn at Reeves. Irritated, Reeves proceeded to pull out a .380 caliber gun and fatally shot Oulson.
According to one witness Charles Cummings and his son, Oulson said, "I can't believe I've been shot" before dying:
"I can't believe people would bring a pistol, a gun, to a movie," said Charles Cummings, who was sitting near Oulson and Reeves. "I can't believe they would argue and fight and shoot one another over popcorn. Over a cellphone."
Cummings, who said he was a combat Marine in Vietnam, said Oulson fell onto him and his son. When they spoke to reporters on Monday, both had blood on their clothes.
"Blood started coming out of his mouth," said Alex Cummings. "It was just a very bad scene."
Charles Cummings said his son went to call 911, while Cummings and another patron who was a nurse began performing CPR on the victim.
Oulson's wife allegedly threw her arm around her husband when he was shot, and she ended up suffering wounds as well. She is being treated at a Tampa Bay hospital and is in stable condition.
