OWN Snags TV Rights to ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’

Some serious congratulations are in order for Oprah WinfreyOWN Network has officially acquired the television rights to the critically acclaimed film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. The biopic stars Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela and Naomie Harris as Winnie Mandela. Since its November premiere, the film has raked in $4.7 million at the box office in addition to Idris’ “Best Actor”  Golden Globe nomination.

“We couldn’t be more honored to showcase this powerful film to the OWN viewers. Nelson Mandela was Oprah’s hero, and ultimately, the inspiration behind Oprah’s school in South Africa,” said OWN president Erik Logan. “His story of forgiveness and redemption is a gift not only to the people he touched, but to the world.”

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom will air on OWN in 2017.
