Lupita Nyong'o Spills Beauty Secrets to Essence: 'I Use Kukui Oil'
Who knew the key to flawless skin was so easy?
We know Lupita Nyong'o was obviously blessed with good genes, but the Academy Award nominee is also responsible when it comes to taking care of her outer shell. Her face is a canvas for make-up artists, but the African beauty rather go au naturale when she's not in front of the camera.
"I don't wear makeup when I'm not working on the red carpet," says the Essence "Black Women in Hollywood" honoree. "Except for a night out here and there… but I try to give my skin a break."
The 12 Years a Slave star also credits lip balm and kukui oil-- a natural Hawaiian oil-- with keeping her complexion smooth and hydrated. Lupita's short coif--also part of her signature look--is a result of wanting a laidback approach to her style.
"I didn't always wear my hair short. In my adolescence I always had long hair and it was relaxed. After the age of 19 I just got really feed up with going to the salon and it taking so much effort to look presentable before you leave the house," she tells the magazine. "So one day I decided to cut it off and my mother was unamused. But she came around."
