The Story Behind Jay Z’s New York Magazine Cover Photo

The mystery behind this ancient photo of Jay Z as been revealed. Jay-Z’s childhood friend Edwin “PHADE” Sacasa was the one who took the photo of Hov that appears on the latest cover of New York Magazine, which pays tribute to the history of NYC’s music scene. The photo was taken on September 21, 1987, when Jay was just 17 years old, at the Jamaica Colosseum Mall in Queens, New York.
