Last night, April 12, The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) held their 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. The barrier breaking award ceremony honors men and women in the media for their representation of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community.
This year the GLAAD organization honored Orange is the New Black actress Laverne Cox with the coveted Stephen F. Kolzak Award. The award is given to an openly gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender media professional who has made an important difference in promoting equality.
Cox has not only won over fans for her compelling role in the Netflix series but she has also made significant strides for the LGBT community. Funny women Wanda Sykes and Ellen DeGeneres are previous Stephen F. Kolzak honorees.
"Laverne Cox has reshaped the way Americans see transgender people and raised the bar in diverse representations of the LGBT community in entertainment," said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. "She is not only a talented actress, but a truly transformational leader in the LGBT equality movement. Through her tireless commitment to building understanding and acceptance through education and advocacy, Laverne is moving equality forward both on and off the screen."
