Erykah Badu Criticized for Performing for Known Dictator King Mswati III

SXSW Film-Interactive-Music - Day 9

For celebrities, sometimes you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

Last week, Erykah Badu took her talents across the border to Swaziland to perform for King Mswati III for his birthday. What seemed like a good deed turned sour when a human rights group criticized Badu for performing for a known dictator. The neo-soul artist received backlash from her actions and was accused of being a hypocrite by The Human Rights Foundation.

Activists, who are opposed to Mswati’s monarchy and beliefs, were appalled that Badu would even consider performing for such a man because of how much she talks about her philanthropy and activism in her music. Badu addressed the issue by saying that she doesn’t owe an explanation, but she only performed as a favor to her friend “Jacob the Jeweler.”

Could this just be the media’s attempt to create controversy?
