Watch: Kanye West Talks J Dilla & Madlib In New Stones Throw Doc
In a new documentary by Los Angeles-based label Stones Throw titled Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton, Kanye West sat down for an eye-opening interview where the Chi-town native spoke on his musical influencers, Madlib and J Dilla.
"It’s amazing: How could we lose Biggie, Pac, Dilla, Steve Jobs, Michael Jackson? It almost feels like the Devil’s winning," West says. "We gotta make music and think, 'If Dilla was alive, would he like this?' I have to work on behalf of Dilla."
When asked about creating in the lab with with Madlib, Yeezy said, “If I could paint the scene of how I felt sitting there with Madlib working on these tracks and hearing the textures... Matter of fact, now that you brought this up, we’ve gotta get some more Madlib beats for the next projects.”
West continues on about making the "wrong music" for mainstream. "When I put a weird-ass Jamaican sample, it works at first but it’s not until I put the [makes discordant musical noise] that it sounds like art or sounds slightly wrong. And now it’ll go to the radio now that it’s wrong, motherfucker. Now play this. Play this 5-minute song that completely fucks up your programming. The best respect that we can pay to great artists that have inspired us so much is to never sell out."
