Galveston, TX Historic March and Inspirational Program
Walk in the footsteps of the ancestors as Reedy Chapel A.M .E. Church re-enacts the first documented celebration of emancipation in Galveston. Just as 800 – 1000 citizens celebrated emancipation on January 1, 1866, you are invited to witness the reading of General Order # 3 from the steps of the Old Galveston Courthouse, then march with jubilation and song to Reedy Chapel A.M.E. Church. In the tradition of the celebration, an inspirational program will follow in the Church sanctuary, featuring African American spirituals, stirring speakers and performances and a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation.
