Premiere: DJ Vadim ‘Magnetic’ Ft. Katrina Blackstone And Serocee

From blunted hip-hop to dusty jazz to global mutations of funk, Russian-born, London-raised DJ Vadim has covered a lot of musical and geographical ground in the twenty years since the launch of his Jazz Fudge label and his Ninja Tune debut “Headz Ain’t Ready” (1995). Remixes for Prince and GusGus, and tours with Kraftwerk and Public Enemy are just a few of the wide-ranging highlights in the crate digger’s storied past.

For his latest album and persona, The Dubcatcher, the spiky-haired, cat-hugger (re)turns to Jamaican dancehall for inspiration. Sandwiched between 2007’s Soundcatcher, and a forthcoming The Soulcatcher, Vadim’s Dubcatcher arrives after years of Vadim performing with reggae greats like Capelton and Macka B.

Among the sixteen cuts incorporating jungle, bass, boogie and garage house is “Magnetic” featuring Katrina Blackstone and Serocee. Vadim in his trademark Panglossian syntax describes it as “A reggae-infused dubby soul number with Californian soulstress Katrina Blackstone laying on the charm.” Sounds about right.

Other guest vocalists include Demolition Man, Dynamite MC, Govenor Tiggy, Rio Hemopo and Sabira Jade. The Dubcatcher is out June 17th on BBE records.
