Three Eighth Grade Boys, One 1.7 Million Dollar Contract

While most eighth grade boys are worrying about acne, video games, and girls these three boys have much bigger things to concentrate on.

The metal trio—Malcolm Brickhouse, 13, Alec Atkins, 13, and Jared Dawkins, 12—known as Unlocking the Truth, just signed a six album $1.7 million record deal with Sony and are on the Warped Tour. The Brooklyn-natives started out playing in the streets and were first discovered in 2012 when Eric Clapton’s drummer, Steve Jordan, saw them play in Washington Park.

“It’s so exciting. We’re jumping over the moon,” Jarad’s mother Tabatha Dawkins told the New York Daily News. “What started out as play dates went to Times Square and now this. It’s been one great thing after another.”

The new record deal is only one of the great projects the trio has in the works. The young band is currently on the Vans Warped Tour. They are writing a book about their rise to fame, which will be published by Penguin and hit bookstores around Christmas, and are also working on a documentary.

Despite their rockstar lifestyle, Dawkins still makes sure that school is their priority. “School work comes first. If their school work is not done, they don’t play,” she said.
