Vixen Exclusive: Curly Girl Collective's Curl Fest
On Sunday (June 22), Curl Fest, a remarkable and festive event had countless fly 'fros flocking to Prospect Park in Brooklyn. called Curl Fest. The ingenious initiative was started by the Curly Girl Collective as a daytime picnic that celebrates the natural hair and beauty of women from different backgrounds and ethnicities. Vixen had the pleasure of attending and flourishing in the beauty of natural hair care culture. We spoke with creator Charisse Higgins to get the inside scoop on her amazing crusade.
Curly Girl Collective had its first launch event in 2011 and the movement has expanded massively since then. The cool collective's mission is to create unique experiences that empower women and celebrate the beauty of natural hair. It all started in 2010, when a group of women started organically sharing their natural hair journeys with on another. Their mutual obsession gave way to gab fests and get-togethers and soon, to the idea of expanding the community. Instead of simply promoting and reviewing natural hair products, the Curly Girl Collective's ultimate goal is to leave people feeling empowered and proud of their natural beauty.
The event featured music by DJ Hollywood and sponsors like Shea Moisture, EdenBodyWorks, Quidad, Curls, Vita Coco, Miss Jessie's, Bergeon and media partner Naturally Curly. The official curly girl hosts were hair bloggers Hey Gorjess and Mo Knows Hair. Their next event is scheduled for August in Brooklyn, so be on the look out.
