90-year-old Holocaust Survivor Arrested During Mike Brown Protests
The shooting death of unarmed teen Mike Brown in Ferguson, Mo., has caused unrest in many, including 90-year-old Holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein, who was arrested Monday during the protests.
Epstein, a St. Louis resident, was one of nine people arrested for blocking the entrance of a state building. About 125 people marched to the Wainwright Building, which houses the offices of Gov. Nixon, and demanded he withdraw the National Guard where peaceful protests have been disrupted.
"I’ve been doing this since I was a teenager. I didn’t think I would have to do it when I was 90,” Epstein told The Nation, as two officers walked her to a police van. “We need to stand up today so that people won’t have to do this when they’re 90.”
Epstein was born Aug. 15, 1924 in Freiburg, Germany and fled to England in 1939 to escape Nazi persecution. Only two members of her family survived the Holocaust, the rest were killed in the Auschwitz concentration camps. Epstein has been an advocate for affordable housing, the pro-choice movement and the antiwar movement.
