Listen: Tinashe Feat. A$AP Rocky ‘Pretend’

Tinashe’s DJ Mustard-produced smash “2 On” has quietly crept in and stolen the summer, turning up dance floors and radio airwaves. But her follow-up single slows things down a bit.

The next look from the 21-year-old singer’s debut studio album Aquarius, “Pretend” focuses on that phase of a relationship where you put on a front like Paul Wall and smile through the problems, in the back of your mind knowing things are on the rocks. Harlem’s own A$AP Rocky drops a verse over the sparse breakbeat.

Tinashe gave VIBE the scoop on the Detail-produced single at SXSW back in March.

“‘Pretend’ is basically about when you’re in a relationship and instead of dealing with the stuff that you deal with in a relationship, you don’t want to do that,” she said. “You’re just going to pretend that everything is fine. I think a lot of people can relate.”

Tinashe—our BIG Cosign artist of June—was still deciding on her next single when VIBE took her to get a crystal ball reading earlier this summer. Nicole Mills of La Brea Psychic chose “How Many Times” over “All Hands On Deck” and “Pretend,” but it looks like Tinashe already had her heart let on the latter.

Aquarius drops on Oct. 7 via RCA Records, and features production from Mike WiLL Made It, Boi-1da, Dev Hynes and Ryan Hemsworth. —John Kennedy
