What Does Kanye West’s New Album And Timberlands Have In Common?
While we may see Kanye West sitting front and center at Paris Fashion Week and taking vacays with his wife and cutiepatootie daughter, according to longtime collaborator Malik Yusef, ‘Ye’s been busy working.
Yusef spoke with Rolling Stone and compared the versatility of Kanye’s upcoming project to that of a pair of Timberlands.
“This album is different. It’s like a pair of Timberlands; like how Timberlands are not quite leather and not quite suede. It’s not the smooth, slick Chicago music sound we have right now and it’s not the ruggedness of just ‘hip-hop hip-hop hip-hop.’ We’re still working like a motherfucker. We’ve been all around the world [recording].”
Yusef who released his debut album Great Chicago Fire – A Cold Day in Hell, back in 2003, has since been laying low and working behind the scenes with Kanye. Although Kanye’s album was a critical success, he admits that creating Yeezus was no walk in the park.
Yeezus was a hard album to work on because it was a departure from where I wanted to be with our music,” Yusef said. “Kanye was very declarative in his statement of ‘I don’t want this to be a regular Kanye album. I don’t want this to be what people are familiar with.'”
Yusef was mum on the name of the album and when it would be released but said there were 20 complete songs and admits to a much smoother recording process, unlike creating Yeezus, which resulted in heated disagreements and Yusef getting kicked off the label eight times.
You know Kanye is serious about his sh*t! Glad to hear Yusef still has a label home and is still collaborating with ‘Ye.
