The Root reports that weed smokers will no longer be arrested when found in possession of the green, leafy substance, but rather fined. “People caught in possession of less than an ounce will be fined $25—people caught getting high will be fined $100,” the site states.
The new legislation solely requires officers to ticket those who decide to light up, and the law begins implementation on Oct. 20. The new act also hopes to erase the racial disparities in the criminal justice system. “Of the 4,614 arrests Philadelphia police made for small amounts of marijuana in 2013, 83 percent targeted African Americans, according to local media, even though studies show the number of black and white Americans who consume pot is roughly the same,” said Councilman Jim Kenney.
According to Al-Jazeera, this new law solidifies Philly as the largest U.S. city to decriminalize marijuana.
