RIP: Oscar De La Renta Gowns That Proved Why Women Loved Him

Gown whisperer Oscar De La Renta managed to squeeze into the spotlight without being present. Before his passing last night (Oct. 20) at the age of 82, the Dominican-born fashion designer, who dressed Jackie Kennedy and every First Lady since, has been a red carpet rock star. Best of all, he was a champion for successful, hardworking women.

“You want to know who my customer is?,” he told Vanity Fair in 2009. “All the women who can afford to buy my clothes! My customers are successful workingwomen. They might be spending less at the moment, but my approach is that fashion must always be optimistic, and that a woman will always be enticed by beautiful clothes.”

Hollywood and hip hop’s finest from Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj to most recently, Michelle Obama and George Clooney’s wife, Amal Alamuddin, have called on his talents and rightfully so. While his legacy will continue to keep women flawless, VIBE sifts through the most memorable pieces from Oscar’s catalog in recent history above.
