Lifetime Announces Air Date For ‘Whitney’ Biopic

Despite the backlash (see: Black Twitter) their Aaliyah biopic received, Lifetime is geared up to give it another go with Whitney Houston. The Angela Bassett-directed film, Whitney, has a received its air date. In an announcement made today, the film is slated to hit the cable network on Jan. 17.

“Whitney chronicles the headline-making relationship between the iconic singer, actress, producer and model Whitney Houston and singer and songwriter Bobby Brown from the time they first met at the very height of their celebrity to their courtship and tumultuous marriage,” the press release reads. “Throughout it all, difficulties followed the superstar couple while they dealt with the overwhelming rewards and consequences of the fame and fortune created by Houston’s meteoric rise that would soon overshadow them both.”

Starring Yaya DaCosta as the late, great Houston, the film marks Bassett’s directorial debut. The film will also include four of Houston’s songs: “The Greatest Love of All,” “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” “I’m Every Woman” and “I Will Always Love You.” Bobby Brown’s “Every Little Step” will be featured in the film as well. In similar fashion as the Aaliyah biopic, a Beyond The Headlines: Whitney Houston documentary will air after the film’s premiere.

Whitney premieres on Lifetime on Jan. 17 at 8pm.
