VIBE Race Project: Raheem DeVaughn Has The Soundtrack For Your Revolution
The latest revolution is being televised, tweeted, and put on wax. Preceding the recent slew of marches, protests and hashtags that plead for the sparing of black lives, soul staple Raheem Devaughn has been an active voice of the tense social climate. In the vein of musical greats like Marvin Gaye, DeVaughn musical awareness is no new thing.
“I have a lot of records that are relevant to stuff that’s going on right now. Things that I recorded 10 years ago, or put out five years ago,” he recently told VIBE. “Just like Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Bob Marley and so many other great artists before me that used their music for social issues and stuff of that nature.”
From tributes to Trayvon Martin (“Trigga Man”), to rising up against senseless violence against and within Black communities(“Bulletproof”), to political and social warfare (“Revelations 2010”), Raheem DeVaughn’s consciousness serves as a rich backdrop for uprisings of today and tomorrow. As part of VIBE’s Race Project, we’ve compiled a playlist for the revolutionaries, courtesy of DeVaughn, and featuring assists from Ludacris, Styles P, Rhymefest and Damian Marley:
