Chris Rock’s ‘Top Five’ Followup Is Already In Progress

When the creative ball is rolling, why bother slow down? Chris Rock is moving on to new projects full speed ahead.

Rock recently talked to Complex about his upcoming movie and how Top Five helped him pave the way to make more of his own brand of movies.

Now that Top Five is available on DVD/Blu-Ray, Rock said, “I think the movie feels like my standup. As I start to write another movie, it’s like, ‘Okay, this is the tone.’ I looked at Top Five as the beginning of my movie career…no disrespect to anything I did before, but this is you know…this is the direction I’m gonna go in.”

Rock expressed his desire to move at a faster pace by meeting with Scott Rudin every week to go over his new movie, which will have a lot of the same cast from Top Five (he was very satisfied with how the film came out and how well the stars did).

“I’m really pleased with Top Five, I gotta tell you,” said Rock. “No movie is perfect, but I’m really happy with it. I’m happy about how the movie makes people feel. It’s a comedy, it’s a love story, it’s nostalgic without being a period piece – you know what I mean? If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.”

Rock had done a couple of appearances at comedy clubs prior to Top Five’s release, but he explains that while there is no special comedy show coming, he says to look out for his next appearance in the summer.

In addition to movie talk, he also spoke on a few rap artists and the recent controversy with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

When asked about Kendrick Lamar’s’s To Pimp a Butterfly, Rock says he loves Kendrick and thinks he did “really good.” He also admits to liking Big Sean, Jay Electronica and O.T. Genasis. He’s hoping for an album from Kanye and Jay Z as well.

“I just hope there’s a good, real hot [album from] Kanye. Desperately waiting for Kanye,” he said. “And you know Jay [Z] is not gonna just let somebody else have the summer…You know Jay is working on it right now. It’s wide open, nobody is ruling it right now. Unless Jay Z steps in.”

Rock then transitioned into talking about the recent events that took place with the SAE frat controversy at the University of Oklahoma and how the n-word plays a role in this generation.

“When I watch [the video], I’m like, ‘Wow these people are really young.’ And I mean, of course they’re young, they’re in a frat,” he said. “But you guys are young ’cause you’re so surprised by this. Like, what do you think happens? I’ve seen all of this. I’ve been seeing this type of stuff for a long time. It is what it is. I don’t know what you can do. Honestly, the girls in the video scared me more than the guys. That’s life, and a lack of saying it is not gonna change anything. There was no rap music when King got shot. When was there black music then? When they were lynching black people, there was no rap. It’s kind of a nonsense argument.”

While we may not all agree with Rock’s statement on the controversy behind the n-word, we can all agree that after Top Five, this next movie is looking to be highly anticipated.
