Report: NYPD Edited Eric Garner’s Wikipedia Page Within Headquarters

The NYPD is coming under fire after reports surfaced that the law enforcement entity edited Eric Garner’s Wikipedia page within its 1 Police Plaza headquarters.

According to Capital New York, certain details of the slain Staten Island native’s case have been changed on the online encyclopedia, including the word “chokehold” being replaced with “chokehold or headlock,” and the sentence “[P]ush Garner’s face into the sidewalk” for “push Garner’s head down into the sidewalk.”

The edits, which you can view below courtesy of the news site, were linked back to IP addresses within the NYPD’s main building.

However, Garner’s page wasn’t the only account under scrutiny. Reports also state the NYPD changed pertinent details on the pages of Amadou Diallo and Sean Bell, who were fatally shot by the police in 1999 and 2006, respectively.

In the case of Officer Kenneth Boss who was one of the four policemen who killed Diallo, the sentence, “Officer Kenneth Boss had been previously involved in an incident where an unarmed man was shot, but remained working as a police officer” was later switched to “Officer Kenneth Boss had been previously involved in an incident where an armed man was shot.”

Another edit to Bell’s page also reads, “one Latino and two African-American men were shot a total of fifty times” changed to “one Latino and two African-American men were shot at a total of fifty times”
