Leader Of SAE Racist Chant Breaks His Silence: ‘It Likely Was Fueled By Alcohol’

Is it ok to be racist because you were taught to be or because you were drunk? We didn’t think so. But Parker Rice, the University of Oklahoma student who led that now-infamous SAE video, chanting: “there’ll never be a n***er at SAE,” blames the incident on being inebriated and possessing prior knowledge of the song.

In a recent statement by Rice released on the Dallas Morning News,  he revealed his racist lyrical prowess was “most likely fueled by alcohol.” He also stated that he and his other frat brothers were taught the song, which comes to no surprise given SAE’s 158-year history. Nonetheless, the 19-year-old wrote that he was “deeply” sorry for the offensive spectacle.

“I am deeply sorry for what I did Saturday night. It was wrong and reckless. I made a horrible mistake by joining into the singing and encouraging others to the same,” he said. “I know everyone wants to know why or how this happened. I admit it likely was fueled by alcohol consumed at the house before the bus trip, but that’s not an excuse. Yes, the song was taught to us, but that doesn’t work as an explanation.”

Writing that he has received “threatening calls as well as frightening talk on social media,” Rice plea for forgiveness turned into defense for his fraternity, who “are feeling unsafe and some have been harassed by others.” He then returned to his apologies, vowing to “reject racism” in the future.

“For me, this is a devastating lesson and I am seeking guidance on how I can learn from this and make sure it never happens again,” he continued. “My goal for the long-term is to be a man who has the heart and the courage to reject racism wherever I see and experience it in the future.“

Despite how apologetic Rice may now be, there is still no denying the uproar the video has caused. Yesterday (Mar. 10) Waka Flocka Flame appeared on CNN to publicly express his disgust for the SAE video. He also declined to perform at the university. – Richy Rosario
