Coachella 2015: Tyler, The Creator Turns The Stage Into His Bedroom

Features

Tyler, The Creator first walked out onto the Coachella stage in 2011. It wasn’t the main stage and the music world still hadn’t made up their minds on the then 20-year-old rapper. Earlier in the year, Odd Future began to receive regular blog coverage and the crew was the talk of the town.

4 years later and that same awkward kid strolled onto the much larger outdoor stage with the same demented and juvenile energy from his Coachella debut (Apr 11). Though, Tyler has accomplished so much since his time as a festival newbie — he still carries the same “I do what I want, when I want” attitude with him. As a performer, his showmanship has also grown considerably. He now has elaborate stage sets and only calls on his Odd Future crew to come crash the stage for the appropriate songs.

This year, the OF mastermind created a giant bedroom with his own custom touch. A giant bed and dresser appeared as his backdrop — which Tyler made sure to do quite a bit of jumping on. The now 24-year-old is still a big ass kid at the end of the day. During his set he playfully shouted out Dr. Dre & Snoop (who were there in 2012), cussed at Kendall Jenner, made fun of and complimented Jack White, and ridiculed Coachella staff for not allowing his videographer onstage.

More importantly, he gave his fans exactly what they wanted. Tyler performed a crowd pleasing mix of old songs and brand new material. He won the crowd over from the get-go with his set opener “My Beamer,” “Yonkers, “Fucking Young and “Perfect.” Hopefully, he’ll be invited back next year with Frank Ocean (we can hope can’t we?).
