Long Island Mother Receives Racist Letter: ‘You Don’t Belong Here’

On Kanye West debut (and classic) album College Dropout, the Chicago emcee rapped about the sneakiness of discrimination.

Racism still alive, they just be concealing it.

In the 11 years since West’s album, those who take issue with people of different races have become quite bold in making their ignorance known. As in the case of mother and homeowner Darcell Copes. Copes daughter checked the mail and noticed a racist letter allegedly written on behalf of members of the Lindenhurst community addressed to where Copes lives demanding that she and her family leave.

“Please leave Lindenhurst as soon as you can it will be better for all of us. Find the town where there are more people like you,” the letter reads.

In an interview with ABC7, Copes said she was taken back by the letter, especially she has had no quarrels or bad dealings with any of her neighbors. However, Copes combated the hurtful words with kindness.

“Sometimes you have a preconceived idea of how a person is just because you don’t know them. You don’t know how they live, you don’t know what they believe,” Copes said. “I’ll continue to pray for you and you need to get out and meet people.”

Good for you, Copes.
