Mike Brown's Father Announces New Memorial On Son's 19th Birthday
On what would've been Mike Brown's 19th birthday, his parents revealed that their son's current memorial—filled with flowers, teddy bears and bouquets from mourners—will instead become a plaque cemented to concrete designed by Brown's mother, Lesley McFadden.
McFadden and Mike Brown Sr. attended a press conference on Wednesday (May 20) with Ferguson Mayor James Knowles wearing sweaters bearing their son's face. Mike Brown's father said the memorial, while heartfelt, had become a traffic hazard to motorists and gave his blessing to the mayor and the city for its removal.
“He would have been nineteen years old,” Brown's father told reporters. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about how I can help other young men to go forward in life.”
The new plaque, a metallic dove, will be constructed and laid in place permanently on Canfield Drive, where Brown was shot and killed by officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9.
