Raven-Symoné & Candace Cameron Bure Argue Over Wedding Cake Discrimination

This is what happens when you put a conservative Christian next to an outspoken woman who believes in equality and is a part of the LGBT community; a heated debate that leaves one host left talking to everyone else except that person.

Candace Cameron Bure, better known as DJ Tanner from Full House, and Raven-Symoné went head to head as the two imposed their beliefs onto one another during a segment for The View this week (July 8). Titled “Let Them Eat Cake?” Raven segued into her thoughts after showing a news clip of Sweet Cakes by Melissa refusing to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple in Oregon.

“The Oregon law bars businesses from discriminating against sexual orientation, race, disability, age or religion and to me, it’s the same exact thing that they did back in the day saying that black people couldn’t do certain things because it’s my ‘religious belief.'”

Candace almost immediately interjected and shut down the comparisons of race and anti-gay discrimination. “I think you are comparing apples to oranges. I don’t think this is discrimination at all. This is about freedom of association. It’s about constitutional rights. It’s about First Amendment rights. We do have the right to still choose who we associate with,” Bure stated. “But they did not refuse to bake the cake because of their sexual orientation. In fact, they baked cakes for them previously. They had a problem with the actual ceremony because that – the ceremony – is what conflicted with their religious beliefs.”

Not making sense of any of it, Symoné flipped the script and told Bure in the nicest possible way, “I refuse to associate myself with you right now. Is that okay?”

The company has since been hit with a $135,000 fine for violation of Oregon’s anti-discrimation law. The two co-hosts kept it moving, but definitely left us with a memorable TV moment of the week. Catch the clip here.
