Idris Elba Lands First Male Cover Of ‘Maxim,’ Confirms He Won’t Play James Bond
Idris Elba, the red carpet’s most dapper eye candy, is serving even more of a treat for Maxim’s September 2015 cover that dropped onto magazine racks today (Aug. 5).
The London-bred film star dished on compelling topics such as sex, music and auto racing for the story. In the interview, he slammed the gossip about his rumored role in the next James Bond movie franchise. Robed in a striking black-grey printed coat, Elba also graced a preview for readers in a behind-the-scenes video of the magazine photoshoot.
“All the things I’ve been working on in the last two years all come out at the same time,” the Takers actor said. “I really like the clothing line … and you know, all the films coming out has been, like, two years of hard work. When you read off the list like that, it’s like, ‘Wow, you’re busy.'”
During the photoshoot, he poses in elegant fall styles by Prada, complete with tailor-made suits and dashingly chic pea coats polished to a gentleman’s caliber. The British heart-throb added his thoughts to honoring the role of first male cover star to crown the magazine. “It’s historical,” he said. “It’s fresh, it marks sort of a new way for the magazine to go.” Maxim’s new editor-in-chief Kate Lanphear told Racked that he was the perfect fit because of his multitude of gifted talents striking the entertainment industry.
“For me, he was really the perfect embodiment of what I think the new Maxim man is. He’s multi-dimensional, he’s complex, he’s sophisticated, but he’s down to earth,” Lanphear said. “It was funny when on set, I was like, ‘Is there anything this guy can’t do?’ He’s an award-winning actor, he’s a DJ, his capsule clothing line for Superdry is about to hit stores. The guy broke the [British] land speed record which hasn’t been touched since like 1928. He’s sort of a living, breathing superhero,” she said.
