Kendrick Lamar Was The Inspiration Behind A New "Be Alright" Scholarship

Kendrick Lamar's work on 'To Pimp A Butterfly' has prompted one organization to create the "Be Alright" scholarship for high school students.

Kendrick Lamar is slowly but surely witnessing the ripple effect of his influence as it moves from his home streets of Compton all across the country. A few months back, he caught wind of one particular North Bergen, New Jersey high school that used his work as a basis for an entire class. In a viral blog post, High Tech High School teacher Brian Mooney used lyrics from To Pimp A Butterfly to draw parallels between his class' assigned reading material, Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye.

His students to wrote their own essays comparing the two artistic works and Mooney posted the responses in a second blog post. K.Dot wound up visiting the school to hear them perform their works and participate in a cypher. Now that same school is the site of a new scholarship inspired by Lamar's "Alright."

The Philadelphia-based organization Oogee Woogee has launched the "Be Alright" scholarship, which will give $1500 to one student at High Tech High to go towards tuition and book fees. During the contest, which started today (Aug. 21), applicants must create a 2-3 minute video using their talents to explain the positive aspects of hip-hop. Viewers will watch videos and like and share to vote for their favorite contestant. The contest ends on Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 9 a.m.

Eventually, Oogee Woogee plans to bring the scholarship to Philly, then expand it nationally. Check out the promo video for the High Tech High scholarship here, and happy voting.

Despite the clear evidence, Soulja Boy insisted that he was still the "comeback king" of last year due to his other business ventures. "I HAD THE BIGGEST COMEBACK OF 2018," he wrote. "I RELEASED MY OWN VIDEO GAME CONSOLE IM THE FIRST RAPPER IN HISTORY TO DO SO!"

As previously reported, Soulja first made the declaration during his interview on The Breakfast Club on Jan. 16. Meek Mill, Tory Lanez, and Lil Yachty previously defended Tyga against Soulja's remarks. Additionally, Soulja took shots at Drake, Kanye West, and the Migos for influencing their musical style.

A$AP Rocky Comments On R. Kelly: "He Needs To Be Dealt With"

A$AP Rocky stopped by Angie Martinez's Power 105.1 radio show to discuss his annual Yams Day celebration in honor of deceased A$AP Mob member, A$AP Yams. The event will take place Thursday (Jan. 17) at the Barclays Center.

While discussing the special guests that will take the stage, Rocky said that his "brother" French Montana is one of the MCs who will be there. When asked about French's recent comments about R. Kelly, Rocky decided to put his two cents in on the highly-publicized sexual misconduct allegations against the Pied Piper of R&B.

"Can I say something about that?" said Rocky when queried abut French's take on Kelly's legacy.  "I think [French] had a Kanye moment where he was trying to articulate something and his delivery just wasn't right. I think what he was trying to say was people like Bill Cosby, people like R. Kelly, [they] build up this legacy for a long time, and it just gets taken away."

Rocky continued by bringing up Kelly's marriage to the then-underage Aaliyah, expressing shock that her age on their marriage certificate was forged.

"Don't get me wrong- do I know if R. Kelly is a rapist and all that other stuff? It seems like he is," he exclaimed. "I mean, like he married Aaliyah when she was, like, 15... He married Aaliyah at 14, 15… how old was he when that alleged video came out? Too g*d damn old. I look at it like this. If that man has a sickness, he needs to be dealt with. He done beat the court dates… it goes to show the whole system is corrupted… R. Kelly was the King of R&B… and this motherf**ker now is known for being a sex pedophile.”

Watch his comments above around the 16:40 mark.
