Prince Reveals He’s A Fan Of Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” Song

Kendrick Lamar’s standout hit “Alright” was a fan favorite when his album, To Pimp A Butterfly, released earlier this year. From its usage as a chant for protesters to being your own personal anthem, everyone is singing the song’s praises. Now, you can add Prince to that list of the melody’s supporters.

In an interview with Medium, the “Purple Rain” musician discussed his views on artists who continue to elevate the creativeness behind their music, highlighting certain rappers and singers’ genius from Kanye West to Jill Scott to the Compton native.

“He just has something to say,” Prince said about Lamar. “It’s pure. And with Thundercat on the album? Come on. You’re not taking ‘Alright’ off my playlist!” The Minnesota native also traveled back to 2005 to speak on Yeezy’s sample of Ray Charles on his song “Gold Digger.” “The way he made something new with that sample was perfect,” he said. Prince also turned his praises to Jilly from Philly, stating that every song on her debut album, Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, “was the truth.”
