Slam Dunk: Venezuela’s Basketball Team Wins 2016 Olympic Qualifier

The NBA’s worldwide ripple effect has hit South America, and has inspired Venezuela to progress to the 2016 Summer Olympics. Last Saturday, the Venezuelan basketball team defeated Argentina 71-67 at the FIBA Americas Championship and received an automatic bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During the tournament held in Mexico City this past weekend, star player Heissler Guillent scored 15 points, which helped them obtain their victory.

Before their total domination on the court, Venezuela also defeated heavy favorite Canada on Friday night (Sept. 11). Despite the absence of their most valuable player, Milwaukee Bucks point guard Greivis Vasquez, Guillent helped pull off the ultimate upset to earn their first Olympic bid since 1992. Meanwhile, both Argentina and Canada have another shot at entering Rio 2016 in the world qualifier tournament set for next summer.
