Details Emerge About The Spring Valley High Assault Victim
The young girl that was assualted at Spring Valley High School suffered multiple injuries after the attack, and is facing familial issues.
Details have emerged in regards to the young student that was brutalized at Spring Valley High Valley High School in Columbia, S.C. According to a report by the New York Daily News, the girl recently lost her mother. She reportedly suffered injuries to her face, neck, and arm after being slammed to the floor and dragged by school resource officer Ben Fields. She also recently became an orphan and is living in foster care.
In an interview with the young student’s lawyer, Todd Rutherford, the attorney revealed that the student is now “devastated and emotionally traumatized” after the incident. Rutherford also spoke with WLTX 19, and further explained the parameters of her injuries.
"He weighs about 300 pounds. She is a student who is 16 years old,” he said. “Who now has a cast on her arm, a band aid on her neck, and neck and back problems. There’s something wrong here."
Rutherford also serves as Democratic Minority Leader of the South Carolina House of Representatives, and discussed the passing of a state law that allows school resource officers to arrest students. He noted that the officers were put in place to discipline student who commit grave offenses that involve guns and knives.
"School resource officers are there to protect the children from outsiders. To protect the children from threats that involve guns and knives. Not because they’re not getting out of their chair when a student asks them to do so," he said. "Law enforcement officers simply need to establish a line that they can not cross. Unfortunately that line is blurry, and it leads a lot of people to believe that if you don’t do exactly what a law enforcement officer asks, that he gets to brutalize you and beat you up in front of other people. And that’s not true."
The identity of the student has not been released to the public as yet. Her foster mother is making an effort to protect her during this time.
