Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” Video Makes History As First Hip Hop Visual To Hit 1 Billion Views
Wiz Khalifa just made hip hop and YouTube history. News surfaced that the Pittsburgh native’s visual for “See You Again” feat. Charlie Puth has landed in the billionth category on the popular video website.
Not only is that a joyous accomplishment, but the Marc Klasfeld-directed reel also became the first hip hop vid to hit a billion views. The sentimental melody, that was written in memory of actor Paul Walker, debuted in March and tied with Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” for the longest running number one rap song on the U.S. billboard charts.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Puth described his thought process behind creating the platinum song, stating, “I was thinking of my friend who had passed away in a very similar way [to Paul Walker]. But it worked so well with everything going on with Paul. I’m really honored that the Furious franchise thought that I captured it the best. I think I broke down and cried when they told me, because I was going to honor my friend, I was going to honor Paul, and anyone who’s ever lost anybody.”
“See You Again” also joins other visuals in the billionaires club including Katy Perry’s “Roar,” Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space,” and Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk.”
