In a recent conference call, VIBE caught up with the Chi-town native who is readying his day one fans and audiences alike for his highly anticipated Motown Records debut, In My Mind (coming in February). For what takes most their entire life to create, when asked his creative process for his inaugural release, the crooner humble-bragged, “30 days,” explaining that with the perfect timing and the right people, the undertaking felt like a victory lap.

As far as what fans can expect from BJ sonically, he isn’t steering too far from the traditional rhythm and blues feels accented with a hint of flavor that aided in his well-deserved rise from background vocalist for other noted artists to solo star. “It’s a big wake up call. I’m letting people know that everything isn’t turned up music. [With this project] I’m reminding people that they can enjoy other sides of the game,” BJ told VIBE.”I help to add to the balance of what’s going on more less than stirring up craziness.”

With included guest features from Kendrick Lamar, Chance The Rapper, and more, 2016 is already looking to be a breakout year for BJ. Press play and take a first look at the newly-released “The Resume” visual.
