In reverence of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., thousands attended the #MLKNow event in NYC's Riverside Church on Monday (Jan. 18). Filled with stunning renditions of various activists' famous speeches enacted by actors and actresses, and an unforgettable moment from Harry Belafonte, one of the inspiring instances came courtesy of platinum rapper J. Cole and burgeoning director Ryan Coogler.
Within the 20-minute sit-down, the pair traded revealing stories of how they respond to police brutality in America whether it was laid out on wax for Cole's melody "Be Free" or Coogler's directorial debut on Oscar Grant in Fruitvale Station.
“So when I heard about your film and I seen it, I just wanna let you know, bro, every time I see it, I break down crying," Cole said. "I can’t control it; it’s leaking. You really did that man justice and his story justice with a classic that’s gonna stand the test of time. So I gotta commend you for that.”
Cole was also moved after he watched Anika Noni Rose's rendition of his aforementioned track, something that could be felt in the video capture below.
