As an intro to the mixtape, the singer covers Jay Electronica’s “Exhibit C,” exhibiting her own soul-powered, indie range. She also manages to cover J. Cole’s “Passin’ Me By.” The mixtape, which she created in a dark basement, pays homage to her past and the honest listeners dedicated to underground music.

Basement Kid is a homage to my past. I used to love going to the record store and buying cassette tapes that had the instrumental track on it,” she told Complex. “I would go home and run straight to the basement and spend hours using my dad’s Fostex Cassette 8 track recorder I’d write and record my own songs over the instrumentals and make remixes/mashups.”
