Premiere: Electro-Cumbia Queen La Yegros Holds Her Own On “Fragil”
After running the festival circuit in South America and Europe, Argentine singer-songwriter La Yegros is back with a new single, “Fragil.” A disciple of chamamé (a rhythm rooted in northern Argentina), La Yegros’ signature sound takes the folkloric cumbia and splices it with the more contemporary sounds of electro and hip-hop.
“Soy un gato de madera que no entrega/ ni su alma, su vida, ni sus penas,” spits La Yegros, whose agile raps warn the token antagonist she’s far from dainty or helpless.
“Fragil” is a follow-up to the more lighthearted, yet spiritual “Chicha Roja,” lead single of La Yegros’ sophomore album Magnetismo, which is produced by longtime friend and mix master King Coya.
Née Mariana Yegros, the flower child works with the folklore from her country and remixes it with modern rhythms to express her steez and originality. She also credits musical influences like Bjork, Colombian singer Petrona Martinez and Rita Indiana, a singer from the Dominican Republic who fuses merengue with electronica.
Magnetismo descends this coming March 11, right before La Yegros embarks on a trek throughout various cities in Europe to promote the new album.
