Lin-Manuel Among The Most Influential People In The World: “I’ve Been Worried About Legacy Since I Was A Kid”

Every once in a blue moon, something happens that changes it all for you. A song or movie that at least turns pop culture on its ear and at best beckons you to reconsider what you’re doing with your life. For some, hip-hop musical Hamilton is that deep. Just ask Lin-Manuel Miranda, who now covers TIME as one of the most influential people in the world.

“Everyone leaves the theater with ‘well what have I done with my life, what is my legacy?'” says Miranda of the Broadway show eliminating distance between the contemporary audience and Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, who essentially wrote himself out of poverty and into power some 200 years ago.

“I’ve been worried about legacy since I was a kid,” he admits earlier. “We have this amount of time, it’s the tiniest grain of sand of time we’re allowed on this Earth to be alive. And what do we leave behind and how much–and we’re not even promised a day.”
