Snapchat Faces Backlash Over 4/20 Bob Marley Filter

The Internet isn’t too happy with Snapchat this week. While 4/20 should be a day of peace, tranquility and good vibes, people are outraged about they choose to celebrate the holiday. After the social media site released a Bob Marley filter, many users are claiming its “digital blackface.”

Immediately, Twitter erupted with claims the filter was both offensive and ignorant. In a statement, the app defended the filter, saying they worked with Marley’s surviving family prior to its release.

“The lens we launched today was created in partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, and gives people a new way to share their appreciation for Bob Marley and his music. Millions of Snapchatters have enjoyed Bob Marley’s music, and we respect his life and achievements,” The statement according to The Verge reads.
