A Nigerian doll collection, "Queens of Africa" is poised to make its debut, just in time for summer break.
The collection, which was created in 2007 by Nigerian entrepreneur Taofick Okoya, seeks to empower young Nigerian girls. The dolls will feature different hair textures and skin tones from dark to light shades, in order to represent all women throughout the African continent. The collection will also display the dolls wearing contemporary African fashion, complete with headdresses and other accessories.
Although Queens of Africa will be new in America, it is quite popular in Nigeria. In fact, in 2014, the dolls outsold top doll manufacturer, Mattel in its Nigerian market, according to HuffPost Black Voices.
Now, Queens of Africa will launch the North American tour, "Coming to America that will make stops in Atlanta, New York, and Chicago. The tour will kick off in May and end July, although specifics have not been released.
